It seems it has become ‘de rigueur‘ and a little ‘hip‘ to scoff at KPIs in recruitment as ‘old school‘.
And it is true that many recruiters hate them.
But that is not because of the KPIs. It is because of the way they are designed and the way they are implemented!
Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.
You can’t manage what you do not measure.
It’s a fact that quality activity leads to success in recruitment, and you need to know what actions drive the outcomes you want and measure the quality and the effectiveness of everything you do.
Recruitment is a blend of art and science after all.
Ban the word ‘KPI’ if you wish, but do not abandon the discipline that leads to success and fun and high self-esteem and happy clients and delighted candidates.
Do not confuse savvy, focussed, empirically proven benchmarks that drive productivity, with ‘micro-managing’.
KPIs are nothing to do with autocratic management. Indeed, they should be owned and driven by the recruiter, who uses them as a personal dashboard for quality outcomes.
What high performing person in any walk of life does not measure the steps in the process and the quality of the outcomes?
A cricketer? Surgeon? Runner? Chef? Engineer?
They all measure, test, evaluate and then use the data for improved outcomes.
